Victim identified in Richmond homicide

Police are investigating the sixth homicide of the year in this Eastern Indiana city.

Lt. Jon Bales told News Center 7 that police and medics were called out late Saturday night to an alley between South 11th and South 10th Streets for an unresponsive male on a picnic table. On arrival, medics determined the man was dead. He had a deep cut in his neck.

Police found a blood trail which led back to an apartment building at 113 South 10th. They obtained a search warrant, and recovered some evidence from the building. Bales said the murder weapon was not recovered.

The victim has been identified as Patrick W. Perkins, 66, of 113 South 10th Street.

Richmond police were assisted by a crime scene investigator from the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.

"It's been a very busy year for us. Six homicides is very uncommon and well above our average, said Lt. Bales. "Our detectives have been very burdened with serious cases this year."

Man hurt after jumping from ATV

Medics were called to an accident on Lundy Lane near North Houston Road early Sunday morning.

Police said that a woman and her boyfriend went out riding an ATV. They started arguing, and the man jumped off the vehicle. State troopers say Charlie Crist fell and was unconscious for a time, and was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

He was later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight and is listed in critical condition.

The woman, Carla Rice,  was taken into custody and will be tested for OVI. Officers believe that alcohol played a part in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation.

Urbana fire claims the life of a dog

Fire gutted a house at 612 Boyce Street early Sunday morning. The resident escaped injury, but a dog died in the fire.

Fire Chief Mark Keller said that units were first called around 4:03 a.m. He said the resident got out and tried to roust his neighbors so they could call the fire department.

When no one answered, he walked three blocks to a Speedway station where he was finally able to call for help.

Keller said the cause of the fire is unknown, and the state fire marshal will be called to investigate.

He said that firefighters were able to get inside and knocked a lot of the flames down. But when the fire spread to the attic, firefighters were ordered out of the house.

They went into a defensive mode, meaning that they fought the blaze from outside.

No dollar amount was available, but Keller said the house was destroyed.
